Lympstone CC (Pre-season) Dinner
This year, the pre-season get together will be held at The Globe in Lympstone on the 8th April. The evening will be a chance to talk about the harsh winter we have hopefully seen the last of and the glorious summer we are bound to see this year! The evening will also see the award of the JB PLayer of the Year trophy - if you haven't voted yet please make sure you e-mail John Goss-Custard for further details as soon as possible.
Winter Nets
Lympstone Cricket Club have for the first time started winter nets under the guidance of Somerset coach, Dan Murnane. The sessions are held at Exmouth Sports Centre from 12-2 on a Sunday - they will run for another 6 weeks.
The first hour of the session is for the nurturing of junior players with senior players (17+) taking precedence in the second hour. New and old players are very welcome and for further information please use the contact details on the website.
These sessions are run with the aid of Leisure East Devon and 'Active Villages'.
October update
Following a successful final encounter against Lympstone Band in rather wintry weather, here is a summary of Lympstone Cricket Club's summer. Of 16 scheduled matches, two were lost to the weather and three because the other side could not raise a team. Lympstone failed to raise a team once. Thus 10 were played, of which six were won; this compares to eight wins from 13 games played last year. Lympstone used 26 players, of whom 11 played in half the matches or more - Captain Nick Stretton missing only two and Vice Captain Ben Ingham only one.
Missing this year from the batting line-up has been the classic stroke play of Harland Walshaw and the steady run accumulation of Jonno Lee, but in their place newcomers Gary Abrahams amassed 150 runs in six outings, whilst George Webster was only out once, to post an end of season average of 123. Of the bowlers Ben Ingham and the ever dependable David Wright were again leading wicket takers, whilst Robin Tolson (in whose garden the team practice) took most catches in the field for the second year running.
Plans for next season include a greater number of matches, plus extended coaching and nets facilities. If anyone would like to play cricket for Lympstone - or be otherwise involved - please give John Goss Custard a call on 277007.

September
In the two months since my last report Lympstone’s great start to the cricket season has spluttered a little. Three of our scheduled opponents were unable to raise teams on the night and two games were victim to soggy pitches; of the four games played only the last resulted in a win.
In early July the only Sunday game of the season saw Lympstone reduced to 33-8 in their first innings against Erratics, with four villagers failing to score and the rest doing so only very slowly. Some later aggression from Charlie Lenygon and the two Ingham boys – and a mean spell of three overs from David Wright without a run conceded – were not enough to save the day. In the following game the batsmen again failed to get going early enough, the cause against Sunset being lost with the first half of the Lympstone innings yielding only 32-2. Inevitably the villagers were trounced by their visitors, to the tune of 52 runs.
The batsmen did much better against Geriatrics at the Coaver Club, with a spirited start of 45 in four overs by George Greenaway and Patrick Hall, followed by a steady stand of 70 from Gary Abrahams (35) and Robin Tolson (31). In all Lympstone knocked up their best ever 20 overs score of 149-4 – and yet it was not enough! Dropped catches, 26 extras and an individual knock of 74 helped Geriatrics to the big target, despite some mainly decent Lympstone bowling which included a late 3-15 from Greenaway.
At home against Heads and Quickes, Lympstone’s 113-4 in a damp drizzle and lousy light was notable mainly for soccer supremo Webster yet again failing to be dismissed, taking his batting average for the season perilously close to 100. The game was restricted to 15 overs each, but though the rain was now steady the Newton St Cyres side had high hopes on 89-3 with three overs to come. Newcomer Cross didn’t see it that way though – taking 6 wickets for 9 runs in two overs to snatch victory for the villagers.

Weather and cancellations - 20th August 2010
Unfortunately, over the last few weeks we have lost quite a few games down to the typical British summer and other teams not being able to raise teams - a problem we know only too well during the peak summer period. We did, however, 'enjoy' a very tight win againt Heads and Quicks last night in swirling wind, poor light and lots of rain. It's always great to win but I think both sides we more than happy to adjourn to the warmth of the local pub and the welcome hot food!!
Match Updates
Lympstone’s unbeaten season continued with a comfortable home victory over the Erratics. Young George Greenaway struck three 6s before retiring on 53 from 32 balls and with good support from Robin Tolson (26) and Gary Abrahams (32 not out), Lympstone closed on 139-1. An Erratics collapse from 59-4 to 65-8 in the space of three overs was thanks mainly to accurate bowling by new player Duncan Wright (5 for 16). A useful 2 for 5 in seven balls from Ed Maltby mopped up the tail, Erratics being bowled out for 91.
Lympstone were entertained at Newton St. Cyres by Heads & Quickes, who won the toss and chose to bat. Lympstone’s bowlers, led by Ben Ingham, Charles Lenygon and Ollie Creighton restricted what looked like a good batting side to 120-7 – a very reachable target for the villagers. Heads and Quickes then produced their secret weapon – a low sun right behind the bowler’s arm – making the ball invisible! Opener Tolson fell to the third ball of the innings and Lympstone FC manager George Webster’s debut knock nearly finished the same way two balls later. Webster went on to make a fighting 15, but with no runs coming from the other end, Lympstone struggled to 25-3 in 8 overs. White flags were not to be waved by our batsmen and a brisk 19 by Stretton paved the way for Charlie Lenygon to join Ben Ingham in some big hitting – the pair putting on 41 in 4 overs. It was nearly enough, leaving Creighton and Jonathon Bissett to find 15 from the last over. A Creighton boundary made the ask 8 from 3 balls, but the pair could only manage two scampered singles and a two, leaving Lympstone three runs short of a tied match. Easy to say “if only…….”!
Lympstone's season begins in fine style.
Last Thursday (13/05/2010), saw Lympstone win its first game of the 2010 season away at Newton Poppleford. A fine team performance saw Lympstone win by 30 runs. The game saw debuts for Nick Molland and Gary Abrahams who both impressed with the bat and for Ben Ingham in his first game as skipper as Nick was unavailable.
