Lympstone’s unbeaten season continued with a comfortable home victory over the Erratics. Young George Greenaway struck three 6s before retiring on 53 from 32 balls and with good support from Robin Tolson (26) and Gary Abrahams (32 not out), Lympstone closed on 139-1. An Erratics collapse from 59-4 to 65-8 in the space of three overs was thanks mainly to accurate bowling by new player Duncan Wright (5 for 16). A useful 2 for 5 in seven balls from Ed Maltby mopped up the tail, Erratics being bowled out for 91.
Lympstone were entertained at Newton St. Cyres by Heads & Quickes, who won the toss and chose to bat. Lympstone’s bowlers, led by Ben Ingham, Charles Lenygon and Ollie Creighton restricted what looked like a good batting side to 120-7 – a very reachable target for the villagers. Heads and Quickes then produced their secret weapon – a low sun right behind the bowler’s arm – making the ball invisible! Opener Tolson fell to the third ball of the innings and Lympstone FC manager George Webster’s debut knock nearly finished the same way two balls later. Webster went on to make a fighting 15, but with no runs coming from the other end, Lympstone struggled to 25-3 in 8 overs. White flags were not to be waved by our batsmen and a brisk 19 by Stretton paved the way for Charlie Lenygon to join Ben Ingham in some big hitting – the pair putting on 41 in 4 overs. It was nearly enough, leaving Creighton and Jonathon Bissett to find 15 from the last over. A Creighton boundary made the ask 8 from 3 balls, but the pair could only manage two scampered singles and a two, leaving Lympstone three runs short of a tied match. Easy to say “if only…….”!
First match of the new season v. Newton Poppleford (13/05/2010)
Thursday 13th May saw Lympstone CC play their first game of the 2010 season away at Newton Poppleford. After being asked to bat, Jamie Cooke (24) and Robin Tolson (18) got the innings off to a rapid start. The innings gained further impetus from Patrick Hall (25ret.) and debutants, Nick Molland (27ret.) and Gary Abrahams. The Lympstone innings closed on a very competitive 145 for 6 off our 20 overs.
It was decided before the game that each player would have to bowl two overs. Newton Poppleford got off to a good start but Patrick Hall (1-8) soon removed one of Newton Poppleford's openers off stump out of the ground. After economical spells from David Hall and David Wright, Ben Ingham (3-9) then stepped in to remove three of Newton Poppleford's useful looking middle order. With Lympstone running out of bowlers (we only had ten players!) Tim Gittins (2-5) came on to bowl and managed to pick up two wickets and bowl a wicket maiden towards the end of the innings. After a promising start, Newton Poppleford's run rate slowed and their innings finished on 115.
Lympstone, captained for the first time by last season's 'Player of the Year'and vice-captain, Ben Ingham, had won their first game of the season by 30 runs.
Thursday 14th May 2009 - Newton Poppleford
A grey evening at Newton Poppleford - scene of big defeats on both visits since the Lympstone club was revived - was not the brightest way to start the new season. Lympstone won the toss and chose first use of what light was left, only to be a wicket down to the second ball of the match. Opener Jonno Lee compensated with an undefeated 36 as the drizzle just about held off, and with good support from Robin Tolson and Ben Ingham, the villagers amassed a respectable 124-9 from their 20 overs.
Match report 21st August 2008
21st August saw the club's final game of the season at Woodbury, with the opposition provided by Faber Maunsell of Exeter. Batting first, the opposition were limited to a total of 67 for 8, with all the runs coming at the top of the order and wickets shared equally among the Lympstone attack, who bowled economically and on target. An athletic close-in catch by Paul Jordan, performing a gymnastic manoeuvre complete with tuck and half pike to take the ball in his fingertips, was a highlight of Lympstone's tight fielding display. In reply, the Lympstone innings got off to a solid start with opener Jamie Cooke's accumulative batting, before a mystery bowler wreaked a trail of destruction in the middle order, extracting pace and bounce to claim four wickets in quick succession. Total collapse was only averted by the timely intervention of Charlie Lenygon and Ben Ingham, who steered the team to victory with an over to spare.
Match reports 26th June - 15th August 2008
26th June saw the popular annual game against the Harefield XI at St Peter's School thrill a large and enthusiastic crowd. Batting first, the opposition posted a challenging 153 for 7, with villager Charlie Lenygon scoring a mighty 54. Toby Ingham was the in form bowler for Lympstone, conceding only six runs off three pacey overs, with David Hall, John Goss Custard and Ed Maltby also in the wickets. To the soundtrack of the village band, Lympstone could only reach 121 in reply, with highlights including a brutal 34 clubbed to all corners of the ground by John Brewer (including 28 in boundaries), and 31 not out by Chris Cooke, who at one stage had a line of nine slip fielders behind him.
